#DYK Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, known as “Nellie Bly,” reached international celebrity status in 1889 when she traveled around the world by ship, train and burro in 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes, ahead of the fictional hero of Jules Verne’s popular book “Around the World in Eighty Days?” Bly worked as an investigative journalist and is the focus of a new movie, "10 Days in a Madhouse." Bly faked insanity in 1887 to study an asylum from the perspective of a patient. After months of rejection from editors on the basis of her sex, Bly received the opportunity to investigate the insane asylum from the New York World. #womenshistory

THE DAILY QUIRK
After talking with actress Caroline Barry, it’s no surprise that she was a perfect fit for the role of iconic journalist Nellie Bly in the film 10 Days In A Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story. Barry’s enthusiasm about acting and the role she plays could only be rivaled by her ability to take a great story on the surface and make it exceptional by imparting her passion for telling it. But much like Bly, there is more than meets the eye with Barry – like her passion for martial arts and her love of working with children.

GALO MAGAZINE
Set for a nationwide release on November 20, the film, which is based on a book written by American newspaper reporter Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman (or as she was more commonly known: Nellie Bly), tells the story of Bly and her successful attempt at infiltrating an infamous women’s insane asylum in New York City. By pretending to be afflicted herself, Bly would spend 10 torturous days in the madhouse, before bringing the ugly truth of what went on behind closed doors to the forefront of newspaper pages.

THE HUDSUCKER
In an era where feminism is openly discussed and championed, it’s no surprise that film studios are beginning to produce more female-focused work. And it’s certainly no surprise to learn that Nellie Bly, an American journalist known for her investigative and undercover reporting, is one film studio’s newest movie subject. In 1887, Bly faked insanity in order to study a mental institution from within and write a riveting exposé for the New York World. It is this story on which Café Pictures’ film 10 Days in a Madhouse is based. The film opened to a successful premiere earlier this year at Cannes Film Festival, and it has been selected by actress Geena Davis to be the opening film at her inaugural Bentonville Film Festival, celebrating women and diversity.

Today’s mental health care system is far from ideal and there’s a lot of room for reform. However, it’s sometimes good to take a step back and look at how much things have improved over the last couple of centuries. It’s also good to honor those people whose work has resulted in more humane conditions, higher standards of care and increased rights for mental health patients. Nellie Bly is one of those people. A film about her work, 10 Days in a Madhouse, comes out this month.

A suspense thriller movie based on Nellie Bly’s experiences is scheduled for release later this year. Caroline Barry will portray Nellie Bly. The movie also stars Christopher Lambert and Kelly Le Brock.
After returning to the States, Bly ended up in New York, where she was hired by Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York World (later to become the founder of the Pulitzer Prizes).
in 1887, as a reporter for the World, Bly went undercover for a shocking exposé of the conditions mental patients had to endure inside New York’s notorious insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island.

Adam Lima helped movie audiences believe a man can fly. That man was Will Smith in 2008’s “Hancock.” By then, Lima was already accustomed to creating magic. He helped the Pevensie children discover Narnia in 2005’s “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”
Now the special effects wizard faces what could be his greatest challenge — transforming 21st-century Salem, Ore., into 19th-century New York City for “10 Days in a Madhouse.”
Lima tells Film Files in an exclusive interview that he finds himself in a bit of a madhouse himself. He might wish he was dealing with an unruly superhero or evil snow queen before he’s done.
“This has been one of the most ambitious projects I have ever undertaken,” Lima says.

When Tim Hines walked into Deepwood Estate in Salem, Ore., he found himself in a different time, a different world — just not the world he was expecting.
He expected to find — or at least create with a bit of movie magic — the world of 19th-century journalist Nellie Bly. What he found instead was something eerily, yet enchantingly, familiar.

NIFTYFLICKS
Meet Nellie Bly. An introduction is long overdue. In fact, one would hope this is more of a re-introduction. You probably met her somewhere before. Perhaps you grandmother spoke of her adventures, or you encountered her at some point between kindergarten and 12th grade. If not, shame on both your grandmother and our public school system. Shame on us all. Nellie Bly used to be a household name. Yes, she lived a long time ago, but so did Charles Lindbergh. We still go on and on about him. It occurs to me that Film Files has posted numerous stories now on the independent film “10 Days in a Madhouse,” about Bly going undercover at a New York insane asylum in 1887, without really saying much about Bly herself.

“Lights, camera and … airplane!”
This is what happens when you try to re-create the 19th century next to an airport. Jet aircraft take off and land all day, taking all of your verisimilitude with them. Diesel trucks are a pain in the arse too.
However, director Tim Hines takes it all in stride. Erich von Stroheim he is not. There isn’t a hint of the stereotypically temperamental filmmaker about him. Even while he is filming the same 30 seconds of action for the 57th time, the man is cucumber cool.

The award-winning team from War of the Worlds: The True Story is at it again, this time showcasing Nellie Bly’s experience of willingly getting herself committed to an infamous insane asylum to expose the abuse, neglect and other atrocities common in the post-Civil War American mental health industry.

THE STATESMAN JOPURNAL
Local museums, city sidewalks and even a county courtroom will soon be transformed into movie sets for “10 Days in a Madhouse.”
The production team of “10 Days in a Madhouse” — the story of Nellie Bly, a journalist whose undercover assignment in 1887 exposed the atrocities of a women’s insane asylum in New York — has been on location for several weeks.
NIFTYFLICKS
Jessica Burgoyne broke into the movie business by actually working in the movie business. Sort of.
Burgoyne and Hines got to talking. Before she knew, she was Hines’ production assistant.
“I was just nerding out with him over the phone,” Burgoyne told Film Files. “I guess he really liked my energy.”
She definitely has energy. She spent Nov. 25 ricocheting around Salem, Ore., in search of Victorian-style settings for Hines’ next project, “Ten Days in the Madhouse.“ The film will tell the story of 19th-century reporter Nellie Bly as she goes undercover in 1887 at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island off Manhattan.

NIFTYFLICKS
Nellie Bly was stripped naked and doused with ice-cold water. There must be easier ways for a girl to make a name for herself in the big city. Caroline Barry has found one. You can play Nellie Bly without actually having to endure ten days in a madhouse. The recent University of Colorado graduate was cast in the role this month by producer Susan Goforth and director Timothy Hines of Pendragon Pictures. It’s her first major professional acting gig since moving to Los Angeles just two months ago.
NIFTYFLICKS
Before Nellie Bly raced around the world in 1889, she changed the world. It was a better world than the one she found when she became a journalist nine years earlier. It was a world where a woman could be a journalist, a world where people began to care more about children, factory workers, and the mentally ill. We live in the world Nellie Bly created — and we don’t even know it. All most people remember about Nellie Bly, if they remember her at all, is the plucky “girl reporter” who beat Jules Verne’s fictional record by traveling around the world in less than 80 days.Filmmakers Susan Goforth and Tim Hines say that is more than unfortunate. It is an injustice, one they intend to correct. Their film “Ten Days in a Madhouse,” will follow Bly’s first major expose as she goes undercover in New York City’s notorious insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island in 1887…and almost never comes out.
